Studio
Versions and history
Every change is a version you can step back to, compare and carry on from.
Every time a piece's code changes, the studio keeps the result as a new version: v1, v2, v3 and on. Nothing is overwritten, so you can ask Perlin for something bold, look at it, and step straight back if the earlier one was better.
Versions belong to the piece. They're saved with it and follow it to your other devices, along with the conversation that made them.
What makes a version
| Labelled | Made when |
|---|---|
| AI | Perlin builds the piece or changes it |
| Edited | You run code you changed by hand in the Code panel |
| Gallery | You open a gallery piece into the piece |
| Imported | You remix a shared piece, which starts a piece with that version |
When Perlin looks over a new piece it made and polishes it, the polished result is a version of its own, and its chip says "refined from v1". See Auto-fix and Look it over.
Some changes stay with the version on stage instead of making a new one:
- Parameter tweaks. Each version keeps its own settings. See Tuning with parameters.
- Motion edits. Keyframes, layers, sound clips and states you change in the Motion panel.
- Repairs. An auto-fix, or Fix with AI, mends the version that broke rather than adding one. Its chip then says "auto-fixed 1×".
Stepping through versions
The arrows beside the piece's title in the top bar step one version at a time, with the number between them ("v3/5"). The keys do the same:
- [ Previous version
- ] Next version
The stage crossfades from one to the next, so flicking back and forth is a quick way to compare two. On a phone the arrows aren't shown: use the Versions tab.
The Versions panel
Click Versions on the rail, or press H. The rail's icon carries the number of versions. The panel lists them newest first, each with a thumbnail, its title, a line such as "v4 · AI · 3D · 5m ago" and the message that asked for it. The one on stage is highlighted. Click any of them to put it on stage.
Version chips in the chat
Each of Perlin's replies that made a version ends with a chip: a thumbnail, the title, the version number and the engine. The chip of the version on stage says Live. Hover over another and it says Restore; click it to go back to that version.
Going back and carrying on
Find the version
Step with [ and ], open the Versions panel, or scroll the chat to its chip.
Put it on stage
Click it. It runs with its own parameter settings, as you left them.
Carry on from it
Send Perlin a message, tweak the controls or edit the code. A change builds on the version on stage, and what comes of it is added as the newest version at the end. The versions you stepped back past stay where they are.
The version on stage is also the one that Share, Publish, Export and renders use. A published piece keeps showing the version you published until you update it: see Share links and publishing.
Engines and settings
A version can be in a different engine from the one before it, for example when you ask Perlin to remake a 3D piece as a shader. The engine is in each version's line ("3D", "Shader", "2D"). A new version keeps your parameter settings from the one it came from only when they share an engine; in a new engine it starts from the piece's own defaults.
Where versions are kept
Versions are part of the piece, saved as you work and synced to your account when you're signed in. My pieces shows how many each piece has. Deleting a piece deletes all of its versions with it. See Saving and your pieces.
