Perlin

Effort levels

Max, High, Medium and Low: what each level is good for and what it costs.

Every request to Perlin goes out at an effort level: how hard it works on that one request. More effort means deeper thinking and richer pieces, and it uses more Vybe Tokens. You pick the level in the composer and can change it whenever you like, even between two changes to the same piece.

Choosing a level

  1. Open the effort menu

In the toolbar under the prompt box, beside the engine picker, the effort button shows a gauge and the level you're on, such as High. Click it.

  2. Pick a level

The menu, headed Effort, lists the levels with a line on what each is for. A tick marks the one you're on, and Default marks the level the studio starts on.

  3. Send as usual

The level applies to every request from then on: new pieces, changes, plans, and the look-overs and fixes Perlin makes on its own. The studio remembers your choice in this browser.

The levels

MediumGreat for most ideas. Most ideas, quickly. The everyday choice, and usually the lightest on tokens5 tokens
LowFastest iterations.Quick turnarounds while you explore an idea or make small changes10 tokens

Max is held back for now. It shows in the menu with a lock and can't be picked on any plan yet.

A level that isn't on offer on the site at the moment doesn't appear in the menu at all.

What each level costs

You're charged for what a request actually took, and the effort level is what matters most. In plain terms:

  • Max takes the most of all.
  • High takes several times more than Low or Medium.
  • Low takes far less than High, and answers fastest.
  • Medium is usually the lightest of all.

Each level's minimum is roughly what a typical request at that level comes to, and the Vybe Tokens page shows the current typical figures for a new piece and a change at each level. Sound effects, textures and 3D models Perlin makes are charged on top, whatever the level (Sound FX, Textures and 3D).

A common way to work is to build the first version at High, then make small changes at Medium or Low.

The minimum to start

To start a request, your balance has to cover the level's minimum. Perlin sets that many tokens aside while it works; when it finishes you're charged what the request took, and whatever wasn't used comes straight back. The minimum isn't a price: a request can come to less, or more, though never more than your balance.

The menu shows where you stand:

  • Beside each level you can afford, its minimum, such as "from 60".
  • A level your balance doesn't cover is greyed out, with what it needs, such as "needs 60".

If the level you're on is beyond your balance, the send button is greyed out and a line under the composer says so, for example "High effort needs 60 tokens and you have 12", with Switch to Medium (the highest level you can afford) and, where token packs are on sale, get more tokens. When no level is covered, the line reads "You're out of Vybe Tokens." or "Not enough Vybe Tokens left for Perlin.", with Get more.

On your own AI key

With a Pro account running Perlin on your own AI key, the menu shows On your own AI key at the top, linking to your keys. No level needs tokens to start then, so none is greyed out for your balance. See Perlin on your own AI key.
