Remixes and credit
How remixing works and how the original’s creator is credited.
Every shared and published piece can be remixed. A remix is a new piece of your own that starts from someone else's: their code, their control settings, their title. You change it however you like, and the original stays exactly as it was.
When you share or publish a remix, VYBE.ART credits the piece it came from and the person who made it.
Remixing a piece
Open the piece
Open any shared or published piece, from the community page, the Recent row on the home page, or a link someone sent you.
Click Remix in studio
It's the bright button in the row along the top of the piece's page (Remix on a phone). The studio opens with a new piece whose first version is the one you were playing, with the same control values.
Make it yours
Ask Perlin for changes, tune the controls, or edit the code. Everything you do is saved to your own piece, with its own versions. Asking Perlin for changes needs an account; opening a remix, tuning it and editing the code by hand don't.
Starting from one of the studio's own gallery pieces works the same way, without a credit. See The gallery and remixing.
How the credit shows
A remix remembers the piece it came from, and everything you share or publish from it carries the credit:
- On the remix's page, next to the VYBE.ART logo at the bottom, it reads Remix of the original's title by its creator. The title leads to the original's page and the name to its creator's profile.
- On the community page, the remix's card is marked Remix.
- In the studio, the Share and Publish popovers show what the piece is a remix of, and say it's shared with a credit to the original.
If the original was only shared by link and never published, the credit names its creator but not the piece: "Remix of a piece by" their name. Where there's no name to give either, it says "A remix of another piece".
The credit stays with the piece. Later saves and edits don't change or remove it, however much the remix moves away from the original.
When no credit is shown
- A remix of your own piece. Building on your own work isn't credited to yourself.
- A remix started from a link that carries the whole piece, such as an Open in viewer link. There's no shared page to point to.
- An original that's no longer on VYBE.ART.
- Code copied by hand into a new piece. Nothing can tell where it came from.
Leaving the credit off
Pro and Studio accounts can leave the credit off a remix, piece by piece.
Open the remix in the studio
Open the piece from your pieces or your account.
Open Share or Publish
Both popovers show the remix credit with a Credit switch.
Switch the credit off
The popover now says "The credit is left off wherever this piece is shared." That applies to everything the piece has already been shared or published as, and to whatever you share next. Switch it back on at any time.
On a Free account the popover says "Pro can leave it off", with a See Pro link to your plan. If a Pro plan ends, the credit comes back on everything the piece was shared as. See Token packs and Pro.
When people remix your pieces
Anyone who can open one of your pieces can remix it: share links as well as published pieces. Their remix is their own piece, and what they do with it never changes yours. When they share or publish it, the remix credits you, and links to your piece if it's published, unless they're on a plan that leaves the credit off.
A remix of someone else's piece can't be entered in a competition. A remix of your own piece can.
